Digital Marketing: Getting with the programme – Part 1

What is digital marketing?

Digital marketingDigital marketing is that subset of marketing that makes use of electronic devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, cellphones, digital billboards, and game consoles to engage with consumers and other business prospects. Internet Marketing is a major component of digital marketing. 

In simplistic terms, digital marketing is the promotion of products or brands via one or more forms of electronic media.

Digital marketing differs from traditional marketing in that it involves the use of channels and methods that enable an organization to more precisely analyze marketing campaigns and understand what is working and what isn't – typically in real time.

Digital marketers monitor things like what is being viewed, how often and for how long, sales conversions, what content works and doesn’t work, etc. While the Internet is most closely associated with digital marketing, other tools include wireless text messaging, mobile instant messaging, mobile apps, podcasts, electronic billboards, digital television and radio channels, etc.

For some businesses digital marketing is more affordable than traditional offline marketing methods. An email or social media campaign, for example, can transmit a marketing message to consumers for a fraction of the cost of a TV ad or print campaign, and potentially reach a wider audience.

By executing your marketing or part of your overall marketing plan digitally, is that results can be tracked and monitored. You can quickly view customer response rates and measure success in real-time, enabling you to plan more effectively for the next one. But best of all, you have the opportunity to more intimately engage with your customers and therefore gain a better understanding of their needs and motivations.

The bottom line is, the digital age is here, and those businesses that fail to adapt to the new marketing climate are at serious risk of becoming extinct.
